Bright Idea Center

Page history last edited by Kathy Moeller 1 yr ago

This page is the place to put all those great ideas you learn from classes you've attended or from your co-workers, or even from your kids.

More from Kathy - 8-06-08.  I just tried out a new and very different catalog.  It's truly amazing!  It is social networking enabled.  Users are encouraged to add tags, and comments, and can even enter a drawing for some pretty hefty prizes when they do.  I love the "browse the shelf" feature, which allows you to see what's next to the book you are looking at.  Just hit the left or right arrows, and the cover of the next book in line appears.   You can use a feature called "my Library" which keeps records of all the books you have checked out, both currently and in the past.  It's from bibliocommons.com and is being beta-tested at the Oakville Public Library in Canada.  Try it out at their website http://www.opl.on.ca/.  If you want to see everything this catalog can do, take the tour.  It  makes every other library catalog look so web 1.0.

From Kathy Moeller - September 14, 2007 If you are writing a speech and need a quotation, or if anyone asks for a quotation book, you can refer them to [http://www.wikiquote.com], a fun new site I just discovered. Among thousands of others, it has quotes by William Osler, along with his picture and a short biography. There is an alphabetical list of people quoted, as well as searching by keyword. Very useful, but be a bit careful. There are quotes from Lenny Bruce and the Howard Stern show as well.

LibGuides - A great Web 2.0 tool put together specifically for libraries. Wouldn't it be great if we could have our subject guides set up using this technology. Just think of all the possibilities. How about setting up a RSS feed to the new titles in your specific subject responsibility that your faculty and students could subscribe to! Boston College has a great implementation of this software. ~~Marina, Sept. 14, 2007.

From Kathy Moeller - June 18, 2007- Try Google Docs and Spreadsheets - it's free! It gives us a terrific way to share documents and spreadsheets with each other. What you do is first create a document. (You can also create a document in Word and upload it to Google Docs). You can then give permission for others to edit the document. Google Docs saves each version, so you can always go back to a previous version. You can add people as collaborators with editing rights, or just give people viewing rights. Each collaborator is assigned a different color, and any changes they make appear in their color. Once you are satisfied with the document, you can choose to publish it so anyone can see it, but it can no longer be edited. It works the same for spreadsheets.
